The Remedy
What is God like?
Is he love? Is he willing to forgive and forget? Do I need to follow certain rules to follow him? Does He care about me? Does He simply tolerate me? Am I a spider being held over the fiery pit of hell by an angry God (think of Puritan theology).
I like to keep things simple. As a Christian, my answer to ""What is God like?" Has to be Jesus.
Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father's love manifest here on earth. Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and are designed to display this love to others.
This evening I want to look at a common passage from Luke 11. This passage teaches on prayer but much more Jesus reveals to us the heart of our Heavenly Father.
After teaching us the Lord's Prayer Jesus looks at Fathers.
"Dads, listen up!"
Would anyone here give your child a snake if he asked for a fish?
Would anyone here give your child a scorpion if he asked for a egg?
These rhetorical questions makes us lean in for more..... Wait, what is Jesus trying to say?
"So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him."
Jesus looks at the dads. "You are sinful. You are messed up! Yet you still would give good gifts to your children."
God is better.
God is not better because He is a sugar daddy. I know some Christians that believe God will give them anything they want if they have "enough faith." Health and Wealth Gospel. God does provide for us but he is much more concerned with your character development than your bank account.
Which brings us back to what God offers to us. He doesn't give us snakes, He doesn't give us scorpion. A flood or a hurricane is not judgement for your sin. He did not give your aunt cancer. He is not teaching you a lesson.
Yet, we suffer. What remedy does God offer?
Himself.
How much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
In times when I am uncertain of direction. When prayers run out of words..... I know God is with me. The Holy Spirit. The Third Person of the Trinity working in my life to make me more like Christ and reminding me of the Father's love.
Tonight, I just want to remind you of the Father's love. Jesus did not die on the cross so God would love you but because He already loved you. I pray that no matter your hurt, your pain, your loneliness you will know God himself is the remedy for your life.
